NPD Group, Inc., a worldwide information agency, is reporting that for the first time in several years, there’s a greater demand for men’s wear, as compared to women’s clothing. The demand for men’s clothing has gone up from $57.8 billion in 2012 to $60.8 billion in 2013. That’s a growth of 5%.
On the other hand, the demand for women’s clothing has gone up by just about 4%. Of course, at $116.4 billion, women’s clothing is still selling more. NPD is saying that all stores are benefitting from this trend – both online and offline. All channels are reporting the gains proportionally.
The best segments in men’s wear seem to be socks, pants and outwear. They have all registered double-digit growths. Analysts are saying that this trend is possibly because of the long stretch of cold weather of recent times. It is believed that the cold weather has prompted the sales to go up by about 12% in 2013. Another factor that has boosted the sales is the changed perception of fashion among men. Innovation has also contributed to this increase in sales.
Online purchases have benefitted particularly from this change. Usually about 14% of men’s apparel sales come from online stores. But online sales have gone up by about 19% over 2012, marking one of the sharpest upswings. The stores are also very happy with the fact that the average price of buys has gone up by 3% for men’s apparel. So not only are the stores making more money, they are in fact now making more from each unit sale as well.
The NPD Group surveyed 13 categories of men’s apparel for this study, and found that sales grew in 12 of them last year. The only category where the sales actually dropped was men’s tops. There has been a 2% decline here from 2012.
